Sherbro is a tropical island off the south-west coast of Sierra leone. The island has over 60 miles of tropical sandy beaches lined with palm & coconut trees and is one of the most scenic places one could wish to find.

The civil war in Sierra Leone has caused great hardship for the islanders, there is no sustainable business and little or no work. The Sherbro Beach Hut Project will change this situation by createing a whole new industry on Sherbro.

Phase 1 of The Sherbro Beach Hut Project is to build 250 beach huts on the island. They will be built within a few miles of Bonthe which is the main town on the island.

Each hut will sleep 4-5 and will be constructed off timber and clay cement, most of which is availble on the island.

The some of the huts will be used by aid workers, all the others will be rented out to back-packers and tourists. This will create much needed revenue for the island as the huts will be able to accommodate over 1000 visitors at any time and will be availible all year round.

Proceeds = Funding
All of the proceeds from the rental of the beach huts will help to fund further projects on the island.

A new medical centre and a new school will be built useing money from beach hut rentals, new fishing boats and farming tools will also be purchased from the proceeds.

New hotels are now open for business in Freetown and many more are under construction.

The capital is spearheading the revival of the tourist industry in Sierra Leone and it is hoped that Sherbro will follow soon.

The tropical climate and golden sandy beaches make Sherbro island a perfect location for development.

Revenue from Tourism
The revenue generated from tourism will enable the local council and the government to to fund projects on Sherbro and across Sierra Leone. Funding for hospitals, schools, transport, power supply and telecommunication is urgently needed.

A new airport is also planned for sherbro but this is several years off, only when there is enough demand will the Government start work on upgradeing Bonthe Airport (BTE).
